Bach’s most theatrical oratorio. Bursting out of the starting gates from the agitated opening chorus, the dramatic events of Jesus’ final days unfold with compelling storytelling. Georges Farquhar’s 1707 play, directed by Simon Goodwin, is a classic rom-com. A wild comedy of love and cash, it was applauded by Time Out as “Exuberant. Deliciously modern. This Restoration romp is a lot of fun.”

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE The Beaux' Stratagem Sunday, October 18, 2pm George Farquhar’s 1707 play is a classic “rom-com” in which two young men who have blown through their fortunes flee to the countryside with one goal: to marry for money. National Theatre Live: SKYLIGHT Sunday, September 20, 2pm Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan reprise their Broadway and London West End roles as former lovers who attempt to rekindle their once-passionate relationship in Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed production of David Hare’s play. Hailed by the Mail on Sunday as “scorching – a brilliant play about changing and clashing values and the true cost of love.” Recorded live in London by NTL, July 2014; broadcast here in high-definition on the big screen in the PepsiCo Theatre. Opera at the Cinema: NORMA Sunday, September 27, 2pm Bellini’s most famous opera, featuring a powerful and vengeful classical heroine sung by Sondra Radvanovsky, in a production from Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu. Directed by American stage director Kevin Newbury with conducting by Renato Palumbo. Sung in Italian, with English subtitles. Recorded live in Barcelona, February 2015; broadcast here in high-definition on the big screen in the PepsiCo Theatre. THE 5 BROWNS Saturday, October 3, 8pm When one looks at five attractive, well-dressed young musicians, ages 28 to 35, one is inclined to think, “ah, a pop group.” Looks can be deceiving: these five brothers and sisters, the first family of five siblings to enroll at New York’s prestigious Juilliard School, are classical music artists of the highest caliber. The world-renowned quintet will perform in various combinations from duos to complex five-piano arrangements; the program will include works by Dukas, Stravinsky, Smetana, and Balakirev.
