People should be made aware of the fact that we all have internal radiation from our body's necessary content of natural potassium-40, only a small fraction of our non-radioactive potassium-39, but enough to give us about a quarter million disintegrations per minute, 24 hours a day, all our lives. Potassium-40 radiation is more energetic than iodine-131, less energetic than phosphorus-32. We are not about to change this, but might consider it as a comparison standard of what we tolerate.

  • HUDSON RIVER MILES
    The Hudson is measured north from Hudson River Mile 0 at the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan. The George Washington Bridge is at HRM 12, the Tappan Zee 28, Bear Mountain 47, Beacon-Newburgh 62, Mid-Hudson 75, Kingston-Rhinecliff 95, Rip Van Winkle 114, and the Federal Dam at Troy, the head of tidewater, at 153. Entries from points east and west in the watershed reference the corresponding river mile on the mainstem.
