Hollywood On The Hudson Presentation In Yonkers
Yonkers, NY – Paul Adler, Rand Commercial Services (RCS) Vice President and Executive Vice President of Hudson River Stage, will present Hollywood on the Hudson, the little-known story of movies made at the “Blue Cube” on the Yonkers’ waterfront, Saturday, December 11, 7:00 PM, Free.
Movies made in Yonkers? It’s true! From 1999 - 2005, Kate and Leopold, The Stepford Wives, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Zoolander and more were made at the “Blue Cube,” the giant glass building on the Yonkers riverfront. Hollywood on the Hudson is a rare chance to hear stories and see photos and film clips of this exciting time. Adler will also tell the history of this 14-acre site, once owned by Phelps Dodge International Corp. and then later BICC Cables Corp.; how it turned into one of the largest brownfields in New York State, its remediation status and development plans.
In 1999, Hudson River Stage booked its first movie, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The sound stage was converted into a one-acre cornfield through which Ichabod Crane rode on horseback, Adler recalls. The film crew transplanted a field of corn there from a Dutchess County farm.
“Taking a vacant industrial site and creating a 'Hollywood on the Hudson' was a magical undertaking that give new life to the City of Yonkers and the shores of the majestic Hudson River,” says Adler.
Hudson River Stage’s 14-acre waterfront property at One Point Street is also known as 233 Alexander Street. Once a thriving electrical cable manufacturing plant, its doors were closed in 1996. Blackacre Partners (of which Adler co-founded with environmental lawyer Debra Rothberg) successfully repurposed and revived the property as a film stage and production facility that was later purchased by Miramax, Robert DeNiro, and Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff of Tribeca Films. From 1999 – 2005, the Stage served as the filming location for major motion pictures.
