Festivals & Fun: Take a trip on Hudson Valley Apple Trail
Deborah Medenbach
The Hudson Valley Apple Trail celebrates an early harvest this year with apples of every description and specialties at every stop.
The seven-orchard trail of family farms through New Paltz and Gardiner promises to be entertaining no matter how you arrive. Tantillo's Farm Market on Route 208 in Gardiner has spectacular views of the mountains and has been known to have a sky diver or two land in its orchards on the weekends.
"We just pray they don't get hurt," Beverly Tantillo said, laughing. During a national skydiving event, 3,000 skydivers dotted the sky, and one landed in the parking lot by prearrangement and picked up his supplies for dinner that night.
What kind of supplies? Well, Tantillo's apple crisp sundaes are an unchanging favorite at the annual Taste of New Paltz, with lines longer than any other.
Hurd's Family Farm on Route 32 in Modena boasts extra-large apples this year thanks to irrigation during the summer's dry spells.
"It was a lot of work, but the results are more than worth it," Susan Hurd said. If the weather's warm, enjoy the cider slushies. If it's cool, Hurd's will offer mulled cider. Have fun with the apple launcher catapult, mazes and hayrides. The farm also boasts three eco-trails for easy, educational walks, teaching visitors about the local environment.
Apple Hill Farm, run by the Moriello family, is a 300-acre property on Route 32 in New Paltz overlooking the Shawangunk Ridge. Stop in to see its fully restored 1859 barn, which sports seven kinds of apples in addition to the pick-your-own varieties in the orchard. Rides on a firetruck are available, too.
Wilklow Orchards is in its sixth generation for a family of apple growers; the secrets have been handed down from parent to child since 1855. The family makes specialty jams and pies, has a hay jump for child's play and farm animals to visit. It is open for apple picking from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
Other farms on the trail are Minard Farms in Clintondale, Wright's Farm in Gardiner and Dressel Farm in New Paltz.

Does anyone know which Apple picking farm near or in New Paltz has an apple throwing catapult with the bad apples?
Thank you
