Elvis Perkins in Dearland's Guide to the Hudson River Valley
Elvis Perkins is quite the traveler and he’s lived in a whole lot of places, including Santa Fe, L.A., New York, Rhode Island and even Jamaica. For now, he and his new band -- named Elvis Perkins in Dearland -- are chilling in the Hudson River Valley in Upstate New York and recently had a chat with FILTER, sharing their favorite spots and things to do in the Valley. The story is in Issue #26 of the Good Music Guide, but for your travel-planning pleasure, we’re sharing Elvis Perkins in Dearlands' extended answers here. We know, we know. You’re welcome.
Hudson River Valley’s…
MOST THRIVING MUSIC SCENE
The Smog and The Ancram Tavern. At Smog you get your share of beer spitting, cagey music, and rage dancing in a dusty garage. At the Ancram Tavern you get to shoot the shit with some dudes who just shot some deer.
BEST PLACE TO SIP COFFEE WITH THE LOCALS
Tivoli Bakery has the best coffee and the best treats to brighten your Wednesday through Sunday routine. Sit out on the porch, soak up sun, and chat with some of the native ones.
MOST MEDITATIVE RIVERBEND
Poets' Walk on River Road [in Dutchess County] is a great place to take a big dog for a walk with amazing views of the river, the bridge, and the Catskill Mountains. Bring your own water though, cause the vandals took the handles.
CHOICE PLACE TO WRITE SONGS OR POETRY
Wrestling river snakes, riding ponies, and climbing apple trees. Need we say more? Fireside at Gristmill Lane.
FINEST LOCAL WATERING HOLE
The Old Stone Church. Pilgrims used this watering hole hundreds of years ago. Keep the dream alive.
REGIONAL DELICACY (OR DELICIOUS REGULAR FOOD)
Mercato Tivolio in Red Hook is the best place around if you want to eat out: local ingredients, fresh pasta and wonderful hosts. If you wanna kick it home-style, build a fire, cook up some Kinsey homegrown lamb and make a pie with Margot. Lunch you can believe in? Hit up the Rhinebeck Health Food Store. Two words- avocado supreme.
BEST MOUNTAIN ROAD IN THE CATSKILLS
The trails at Minnewaska and Mohonk Preserve, and the road to Kaaterskill Falls. Pretty much anywhere you go in the mountains is beautiful. Pick a road and go man, go!
LAST AREA THEY SHOULD TURN INTO A MINI-MALL
The Hudson River Valley... Strip malls are sad and lonely. We mourn for the land.
BEST PLACE TO WATCH THE APOCALYPSE FROM
A bear cave in the Tivoli Bays. That's where Wyndham will be tonight, and three years from now January.
FAVORITE MEMORIES
Springtime in the orchards, summer storms, swimming, the burrito stand, and lots of time by the grill. Tweet tweet. Adios!
