As always our hikes will include stops along the way to interpret natural and historic features. We hike at the pace of our slowest hiker and remember bring a snack for the halfway point. Family Fun Hike: Lakeville Ironworks Trail. Sunday, July 3rd at 1:00PM Take an interpretive hike with park staff through the historic Lakeville ironworks community to see what still remains. Reconnect with our nation’s history as we discuss Lakeville’s influence on the American Revolution and the centuries that followed. The program will start at the Visitor Center and lasts approximately two hours. [Easy 1.5 mile interpretive walk] Hike of the Month: McKeag’s Meadow Loop. Saturday, July 9th at 11:00AM Enjoy a hike with park staff into an assortment of diverse ecosystems. Hikers will encounter a variety of birds and wildlife as we pass through these different habitats. The program will start at the Visitor Center and last approximately four hours. Hikers are encouraged to bring a recommended liter bottle of water and their favorite trailside snack. [Moderate 4.5 mile hike] Family Fun Walk: Eagle Valley Loop. Sunday, July 17th at 1:00 PM Join park staff as we roll up our sleeves and dive into a “hands on” approach to pond ecology. We will enjoy an easy stroll around Eagle Pond to observe a variety of wildlife that depends on ponds for survival. Participants are then encouraged to sort through various aquatic plants and search for macro invertebrates. You will be surprised by what you find! The program will meet at the Eagle Pond Parking Area and last approximately two hours. Please call and verify directions when you register for this event. [Easy 0.5 mile interpretive walk] Weekend Warrior Hike: Sterling Valley Loop. Saturday, July 30th at 9:00 AM Challenge yourself to a strenuous hike in the heart of Sterling Forest®. Join park staff as we guide you through various environments, including habitats favored by the Golden Winged Warbler. Due to the length of this hike, participants are required to have an adequate water supply for each individual. This hike will start at the Visitor Center and last approximately five hours. [Strenuous 7.5 mile hike]

Lecture Series: Bird Feeder Workshop. Sunday, March 6th at 1 PM We will talk about our feathered friends, including a segment on how to make a bird feeder. Please bring an empty soda bottle with its cap. Family Fun Walk: Lakeville Iron Trail. Sunday, March 13th at 12 Noon Join Park Environmental Educator Doc Bayne for a walk on the same trails and roads miners historically walked to get to work. (Easy 1.5 mile hike) Hike of the Month: Lakeville Iron Trail at Night. Friday, March 18th at 7 PM Join Park Environmental Educator Doc Bayne for a night walk on the same trails and roads miners historically walked to get to work. Are their spirits still in Lakeville? Come and see for yourself. Bring a candle lantern if you can; flashlights will not be used on the hike. The program will last approximately two hours. (Easy 1.5 mile walk) (This hike has been a terrific attraction and filled to overflow every time we announce it, so if you have gone before please allow new people the experience.) Lecture Series: Ticks - Get to Know Them. Sunday, March 27th at 1 PM Join Park Environmental Educator Doc Bayne and learn about ticks, where they live, how they survive, and what they eat. After the lecture we will go on a tick hunt to see who can find these eight legged vampires. The program will last approximately three hours. (Easy 1 mile hike)

Sunday, February 6 at 12 Noon Find out what the beavers do in the winter and explore their pond by walking on the ice (if there is safe ice). Find out which animals are out on a cold winter's day and learn how to read the signs that they leave behind. Walking on the ice may be slippery, if you have crampons please bring them. (Easy 2 mile hike) Lecture Series: Photography. Sunday, February 13 at 1 PM See things a new light. Join Doc Bayne and learn how a camera works. You will be amazed at how easy taking good pictures is once you know how your camera operates. Lecture Series: Animals of the Park. Sunday, February 20th at 1 PM Join Park Environmental Educator Doc Bayne to find out what animals live in the Park, how they survive in the forest, and how they were used by the people who lived off the land. The program will last approximately two hours. (indoor activity) Lecture Series: Animal Tracks. Sunday, February 27th at 1 PM We will be identifying some of the animals of the Park by finding their tracks. We will show you how to make castings of animal tracks and then identify tracks while hiking. The program will last approximately three hours. You will be amazed how easy it is to take good pictures once you know how your camera operates. We will talk about wide angle, telephoto, and macro shooting. Lecture Series: Digital Photography on the Computer: Sunday, December 5 at 1 PM  Join Doc Bayne and learn how to improve the photos from your digital camera. You will be surprised how simple it is to use your computer software to make your pictures come alive. Lecture Series: The Furnaces of Sterling Forest: Sunday, December 12 at 1 PM  Do you know what a blast furnace is? Do you know what a bloomery is? Do you know what a forge was? After this lecture you will know what they are and how to identify the remains of these structures. Lecture Series: Sterling Forest Gardens: Sunday, December 19 at 1 PM  Guest Photographer Pat Bayne will bring her presentation on the Sterling Forest Garden that was here in 1960. The Gardens were an attraction that was a sight to behold. The Garden closed in the 1970’s and the grounds are now the Renaissance Fair.  Registration is required for all programs.  For more information or to register, call 845-351-5907.
