The Children's Museum of Science and Technology celebrates the arrival of 2010 with an animal show in the Operation W.I.L.D. exhibit. Kids participate in fun games and activities plus a parade. There’s a countdown to the Noon Year with a bubble blowing bonanza! Another terrific family event where you won’t need a babysitter is First Night in Millbrook on December 31st. Bring the kids to this charming village to walk the main street and see all the entertainment. Different genres of music from jazz to classical play throughout, while circus acts, marionettes, and magicians entertain children of all ages.

Skiing enthusiasts will love Windham Mountain’s New Year’s Eve. Start the night in the Legends Lounge aprés skiing. When the kids get off the slopes, they can expend more energy jumping in the Bounce House, or interacting with the clown and magician. At 9 pm, whether you're inside or outside on the snow, watch the spectacular fireworks light up the mountain. Winter Farmers Markets

Smoky black bean soup with winter squash

Jennifer Clair / Home Cooking NY, Valley Table Issue 48
 

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
4 large cloves garlic, roughly chopped
3 stalks celery, roughly chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/4teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 pound dried black beans, soaked overnight and drained
1 smoked ham hock
2 quarts chicken broth
1 14-ounce can whole tomatoes, crushed with your hands
1 small (about 1 pound) butternut squash, peeled and cut in 1/2-inch cubes
1 ripe (black) plantain, cut in 1/2-inch half moons
1 teaspoon coarse salt, or more as needed
juice of 1 lime, or more as needed
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, for serving
sour cream or Greek yogurt, for serving
Ingredients: Horseradish Vinaigrette
4 ounces horseradish
1 quart chicken stock
12 ounces grapeseed oil
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco
 
Serving: 8
 

Method: 

1. In a large, heavy soup pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat.
2. Add the onions, garlic, and celery, and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
3. Add spices and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
4. Stir in soaked beans, ham hock, and broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer, covered, until the beans and hock are just tender, about 60 minutes.
5. Add the tomatoes, squash, and plantain and continue cooking for 30 minutes.
6. Remove the hock, cool, and shred the meat from the bone.
7. Transfer one-quarter of the soup to a food processor or blender and puree until smooth.
8. Stir the puree back into the soup, add the ham pieces, and season with salt and lime juice.
Serve hot with cilantro and sour cream on top.

Seasonal Recipe of the Month

A number of farmer's markets are still open and beets and colorful root vegetables take center stage. Savor the beauty and the sweet flavor of beets in this delicious salad from The Valley Table archives.

 

Local beet carpaccio salad with warm montrachet goat cheese and horseradish vinaigrette

Ingredients: Beet Salad
1 head frisee
1 head radicchio
4 ounces goat cheese
baby mache
1 cup horseradish vinaigrette
1/2 ounce chive oil
2 red beets
2 golden beets
2 quarts water (for each beet)
1 ounce white vinegar (for each beet)
1 tablespoon salt (for each beet)

Ingredients: Horseradish Vinaigrette
4 ounces horseradish
1 quart chicken stock
12 ounces grapeseed oil
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco

Ingredients: Chive Oil
5 cups chives
1 cup grapeseed oil

Serving: (4)
 

Method: Beets

1. Place the red beets and the golden beets in separate pots and fill with water, salt and vinegar. Bring them to a simmer and cook until fork tender.
2. Let the beets cool and then peel.
3. Using a mandolin, shred the red beet with medium blade. Slice the golden beets on the mandolin as thin as possible.
Optional: Add pieces of chicken or beef at this point if desired.

Method: Horseradish vinaigrette
1. In a medium sauce pan, reduce the chicken stock to 1 cup. Transfer the stock to a stainless steel bowl. Note: Do not let the stock cool off; you will get better results if it's still hot.
2. Using a wire balloon whip, add the grated horseradish to the stock and slowly incorporate the grapeseed oil.
Adjust the seasoning with Tabasco, salt and pepper.

Method: Chive oil
In a blender, add the chopped chives and the oil together. Puree until smooth.

To finish
1. In a stainless steel bowl, mix the shredded red beets with the frisee, radicchio; add horseradish vinaigrette, to taste. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
2. Place golden beets in a circle on a plate.
3. Place a portion of the red beet salad in the center of the golden beets.
4. Cut a 1-ounce piece of warmed goat cheese and place on top of the red beet salad. Dress with mache.
5. Drizzle the chive oil around the plate.

It was all fantasy and fun at the Big Apple Comic-Con, which runs through Sunday with appearances by sci-fi and B-list stars, as well as big names in sports. ``New York is the world mecca of comic books, and this show is a blockbuster,'' said Vincent Zurzolo, whose New York-based Metropolis Collectibles Inc. is a premier dealer in vintage comic books. On Friday, as the show opened on a Hudson River pier, he presided over gems like Amazing Fantasy No. 15, published by Marvel Comics in 1962, with Spiderman making his debut. The price: $115,000. Celebrities invited during the weekend to the 175,000-square-foot space included Shatner, the one-time ``Star Trek'' actor who remains an icon of pop culture. His newest comic book is the fourth in a series he developed based on ``TekWar,'' his science fiction novels, set in the 22nd century when ``tek'' is an illegal, addictive, mind-altering digital drug. ``It's not your grandfather's comic book anymore,'' Shatner said. ``It's filled with lust and licentiousness, it's filled with sexual innuendo -- absolutely! It's a mature thing.'' During the weekend, fans of ``Batman,'' ``The Incredible Hulk'' and the ``Dukes of Hazzard'' can meet stars of the old TV shows: Adam West, Lou Ferrigno, John Schneider and Tom Wopat. And sports aficionados awaited Dwight Gooden, Yogi Berra and Pete Rose. ``With this, we bring the comic-book world to life,'' said Gareb Shamus, CEO of Wizard Entertainment, which organized the New York show along with Comic-Cons in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and Toronto. He started selling comics as a 12-year-old growing up in Nanuet, N.Y., a town 25 miles north of New York City. ``That was my first job -- and I'm still doing it,'' said the 40-year-old father of two children, ages 9 and 11. He plays with them, tapping their opinion about ``what's the latest and greatest on the market,'' said Shamus, who publishes the FunFare toy-industry magazine. ``My role is to identify what's hot before everyone else does.'' More than 500 exhibitors displayed everything from a fully functioning ``Batmobile'' to the current dozen ``hottest toys,'' chosen by FunFare. As long lines of fans lined up to have comic books signed by their artistic creators, families streamed into the show. ``We don't want children to be exposed to an adults-only environment, with sex and violence,'' said Shamus, standing by a table where real-looking weapons -- synthetic air pistols, machine-guns and a sniper rifle -- were sold to anyone over 18 for as little $45. On Friday, Shamus and two business partners launched GeekChicDaily, a free online newsletter and Web site aimed at pop culture enthusiasts looking for new video games, technology and applications. ``It's cool to be a geek now,'' Shamus said. As part of the show, panel discussions were scheduled on topics such as ``Star Trek'' and reality shows. With tickets to the Manhattan event selling at $25 each, organizers expect at least 30,000 people -- some dressed in costumes representing their favorite comic-book, movie or TV characters. Outfits will be judged on Saturday evening during a party open to the public. In short, Shamus said, Comic-Con ``is like Toys R Us on steroids.''
