What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is both a celebration of women around the world, and an opportunity to educate people about the plight of women in other countries. Last year, International Women’s Day was recognized by the Women’s organization Women for Women International with a campaign to have women all over the world walk across a bridge in solidarity.
The International Women’s Day Centenary should make the women of past proud, the women of current inspired, and the women of the future envisioned. Women have made great strides in equality yet there is still a great deal to be achieved on many fronts and the 2011 Centenary will provide a unique and global opportunity to reignite, inspire and channel women’s equality for the future. Why are we doing something in the Hudson Valley?
The founder of Women for Women International, Zainab Salbi, spoke at an event in our community last year. She inspired a group of women, under the auspices of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Alliance to charter a bus to NYC to participate in the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The event was fantastic and very fulfilling, and the attendees knew we needed to bring it back home, to our community and to our bridge. There are many, many women’s organizations in the Hudson Valley who would find empathy with this cause – women’s rights at home and internationally – and we want to allow everyone to be part of this year’s event.

What are we asking our community to do?
Through our dynamic committee, we will be able to enlist community groups, colleges, non-profits and individuals alike who feel that women’s rights are an important cause, to attend the walk. Each participating group is encouraged to recruit attendees, create banners or other forms of expression that can be shared at the event, so that we can bring hundreds (if not thousands) of women together in solidarity.
Overview of the Event
The event is about solidarity, and also about education.
- Personal ~ improve their personal health and well being, and their businesses as employees, business owners, entrepreneurs.
- Family ~ help their families be healthier and prepare for the future right now.
- Country ~ let their voices be heard: to speak up, to make positive changes in their communities/countries.
After the EventWe hope after the event we have started a discussion. We hope attendees will join together for dinner or drinks in one of our area restaurants to continue the momentum that evening.
